Twitter's Amazing Virtual World Stats

VirtualWorld.ca

It is amazing how fast the Virtual World can grow!

Today Twitter released some stats on it's growth since it began in 2006, and the numbers are quite impressive.

Here are some of the high points:

# of tweets

• 3 years, 2 months and 1 day. The time it took from the first Tweet to the billionth Tweet.
• 1 week.  The time it now takes for users to send a billion Tweets.

• 50 million. The average number of Tweets people sent per day, one year ago.
• 140 million. The average number of Tweets people sent per day, in the last month.
• 177 million. Tweets sent on March 11, 2011.

# of accounts

• 572,000.  Number of new accounts created on March 12, 2011.
• 460,000.  Average number of new accounts per day over the last month.

Mobile use

• 182%.  Increase in number of mobile users over the past year.

The growth of Twitter has truly been incredible to watch.  I remember back in the spring of 2008 (or was it 2007?) hearing about this new site called "Twitter".  I checked it out and saw how it worked.  I decided to sign up and knew that having a cool username was a great thing.  Almost everything I tried as a username was still available, big city names, cool words and so on.  I registered a few city names and left it at that.  I wish I had picked up a few more good handles for different interests I have, but there was no way of knowing how big Twitter would become.  Now that they are getting over half a million new accounts per day, it must be really hard to get a good username!
